How to download MMS videos on Linux

I was fascinated when I saw this video. It shows the Microsoft’s vision for the year 2019. But, the quality posted on youtube wasn’t very good. So, I went to the official Microsoft’s website and found the same video, this time, in a better resolution. The problem is it’s transmitted using the MMS protocol. Therefore, my journey in order to find out a way to download that video begun. Fortunately, it didn’t took more than a few minutes.

MIMMS is a GNU (General Public License) program, written in Python, that makes easy the task of saving videos transmitted to you by the MMS protocol. From the own MIMMS’s readme: “mimms is a program designed to allow you to download streams using the MMS protocol and save them to your computer, as opposed to watching them live. Similar functionality is available in full media player suites such as Xine, MPlayer, and VLC, but mimms is quick and easy to use and, for the time being, remains a useful program.

To install MIMMS, just type sudo apt-get install mimms

To use it just type mimms yourmmsurlhere

For example: mimms mms://

Let me give you a tip: there was some times where the program didn’t download the entire video. If that happens, just type: mimms -r yourmmsurlhere

Do that as soon as you see the error, because the program takes advantage from the TCP connections already opened. If you take too long, the TCP connections will be closed and the parameter “-r” won’t be useful, since the download will start from its beginning.

PS: If you detected some mistake in any part of my post or in my English, please, send me an email or a comment correcting me! I’m Brazilian, therefore I’m not an English native speaker. I would love to being corrected! Thank you in advance! :)
